My Fixer Upper

Posted on by Vince Sarfraz SD

My "fixer-upper"  home is a mix of unfinished projects. My husband is an excellent handyman but he does have a full-time job. Just as he is about to complete one thing, something else breaks down so he has to stop one project to deal with another. This is a true test of my patience and sanity as this obsessive compulsive girl hates chaos.

Last week, I drove a girl home from youth group. I meet her about a year and a half ago. She is quiet and doesn't share much so I was surprised when she agreed to come to church with me.

On the way home, I asked her how things went. She said the group discussed goal setting. Then she shared with me that her number one goal is to finish high school.

As we continued to drive she shared more of her story: “I would be one of the few people in my family to graduate from high school. I was homeless when we were little. My mom called it camping because we had a tent and camping gear. We moved to a new location each night. I switched schools a lot. That's why it's hard for me to make friends. I really just want to finish high school.”

As I dropped her off at her one bedroom studio she shares with her mom and 3 brothers and sisters, she says she is happy to have a home and be able to go to the same school each day.

I’m thankful for God's subtle “reality checks.” I have a home and though it’s a mix of unfinished projects it is a blessing. I thank God for the roof over my head. I thank God for putting this young lady in my life to remind me that the mess and chaos of my home-in repair is nothing compared to the mess our lives are if we don’t have Jesus. Really, we are all under construction.
