Give Life To Your Story

The following story was written by a member of the Youth For Christ USA Cities Pursuit Community. These are real stories and pieces showing how God is using YFC USA as a vehicle in raising up life-long followers of Jesus all across the nation.

Give Life to Your Story is the tagline for Youth For Christ. While I was working with some kids in a detention center last week, I asked them: How does God’s story interact with your story? A student named Dre, whom I had just met, shared how God was intrinsically part of his story before he was even born. His father was 16 years old and his mother was 15 when they found out she was pregnant with Dre. His father knew that he was not responsible enough to take care of a child, so he decided to rob a local convenience store to get the money to pay for his girlfriend to terminate the pregnancy. The robbery did not go as planned. The police arrived so quickly that Dre’s father was not able to get away, and he was brought to the local juvenile detention center—the same detention center that Dre is sitting in right now.

Dre believes that it is a miracle that he was even born. That night, the staff and volunteers at Youth For Christ celebrated his story. For the first time, Dre reflected on the power of God and even got emotional when thinking about his future. We reminded him that God is not finished with him yet; God had a plan for him even before he was born. It is our job to keep walking with Dre to help him face his future and gather strength from Jesus to make sure his own kids don’t end up in a detention center.

At Youth For Christ, we want young people to hear that none of their lives are a mistake—God does not create junk and does not make mistakes. “You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body and knit me together in my mother’s womb. Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex! Your workmanship is marvelous—how well I know it.” –Psalm 139:13-14 (NLT)
